Major AEW Stars Taking A Break Following All Out

Tony Khan AEW

Two big-name AEW stars are taking some time off.

In the opening match of All Out, Daniel Garcia finally got his one-on-one match with MJF. However, his revenge was somewhat bittersweet as he lost the match following a low blow. But that didn’t mean he didn’t exact some revenge for being put on the shelf back in July.

MJF went to raise Garcia’s hand after the match while hitting another low blow, but this time a low shot from Garcia blocked it. Garcia then hit MJF with an Avalanche Piledriver to stand tall.

Although Garcia was the man left standing at the end of the segment, many questioned why he was on the receiving end of yet another high-profile defeat.

Writing on social media, Ibou, of Wrestle Purists noted that Garcia was actually originally scheduled to win, but the fact he’s yet to re-sign with the company caused a change in plans. Ibou added that the post-match angle was a way of writing MJF off television as he’s taking a break to film a movie. Garcia’s contract is set to expire in October.

The originally planned finish to MJF vs Daniel Garcia was a clean victory for Daniel.

AEW is under the impression that Garcia is staying, but because a deal has still not been signed, the decision was made to have MJF go over.

MJF is expected to go film a movie.

Another Top AEW Star Stepping Away

Speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer backed up the report that Garcia would have won the match if he had signed a new contract, especially as MJF is taking a break. Interestingly, Meltzer noted that Strickland will also be taking some time off.

“If he would have re-signed, he probably would have won the match.”

Alvarez said he wasn’t sure about that theory as it would mean MJF losing for the 2nd pay-per-view in a row. Meltzer continued:

“But he’s [MJF] gone. He’s taking time off, I mean, why wouldn’t he lose..? But he didn’t lose, but he ended up getting taken out it’s an injury angle, and he’s gonna be gone for a while. Him and Swerve both did injury angles and are gonna be gone for a while…

That’s what I heard anyway. I heard a long time ago that Swerve was going to sign the contract and he was gonna get some time off for whatever reason. This was the angle.”

Meltzer and Alvarez surmised that Strickland could return at WrestleDream on October 12th in his home state of Washington.

In the hours before AEW All In it was confirmed that Swerve Strickland had signed a new contract making him one of the company’s highest-paid stars.
