A former AEW Champion knows time is running out.

Kenny Omega didn’t wrestle for 13 months after being diagnosed with diverticulitis in early December 2023, just days after wrestling Ethan Page on Collision. The former AEW World Champion had hoped to avoid surgery, but he eventually went under the knife in May after making two appearances on Dynamite.

Despite the severity of his condition, Omega returned to the ring in January 2025 and has since resumed his career with AEW.

However, there was a very real possibility he’d never wrestle again.

AEW Star Kenny Omega Was Close To Death

During a new interview with Wrestling Observer Radio, Omega revealed just how sick he was when he wrestled the last match before his hiatus in December 2023. He explained that he spent the entire match trying not to fall over and pass out, before eventually seeing a doctor.

Omega added that after seeking medical advice, he was called back to the hospital just an hour and a half later, as there was genuine concern for his life.

“I remember going home, getting a call about an hour and a half later, and they said, ‘Yeah, do you mind coming back and just being prepared to stay in the hospital for quite a while?’” Omega recounted. “I said, ‘I’ll pack a bag… and I’ll head to you guys tomorrow.’…

[They said] ‘No, like, you need to come now… we don’t want to, like, worry you or anything, but you could be at risk of dying.’… ‘Okay, right, roger that, closed, I’ll be right there, man.’”

While reflecting on his in-ring comeback, Omega said that in the days after Anarchy in the Arena, he stayed in bed until 5 pm because he didn’t have the energy to move around. Unsurprisingly, he doesn’t think he’s got much left to give in the ring.

“The ones that don’t mean anything, it’s it’s like chipping away at what’s what’s left, and there isn’t much left,” he stated. “So I want to make sure that what is left and what the meat that is on the bone still, it’s a good tasting meat, you know, hopefully.”

At All In, Kenny Omega will meet long-time rival Kazuchika Okada in a huge unification match. Both Omega’s International and Okada’s Continental Championships will be on the line, with the winner declared the Unified Champion.
