AEW Star Admits They Need To Stop “Standing In Their Own Way”
An AEW star is looking forward not back.
In July, Sammy Guevara returned to the ring for the first time since mid-February. Although not officially acknowledged at the time, Guevara’s absence was due to a suspension after an incident during a match with Jeff Hardy.
During the match on Rampage, Hardy sustained a broken nose and suspected concussion before finishing the match and crucially taking his opponent’s finisher. Guevara was ultimately suspended because concussion protocol wasn’t followed.
Once free of suspension, Guevara made his return in Ring of Honor where he now holds the Tag Team Titles with Dustin Rhodes. At AEW Grand Slam, Guevara is set to take on Kazchika Okada in his biggest singles match since getting back in the ring.
In the latest edition of his vlog, Guevara said he’s determined to make the most of any opportunity that comes his way, expressing his determination to stop getting himself in difficult situations.
“What a trip. This was literally my first time being back on the road in literally five months. Had some matches, I felt good out there. The Texas crowd always showing me love, so thank you, Arlington. It was a cool set-up, too. It was a different vibe than the normal entrance set-up that they have. I’m digging it.
I made my return, and it was in Ring of Honor, which I think no one expected that, and I see some people complaining online, like, ‘What’s he doing in Ring of Honor?’ It’s like guys, I’m just happy to be back in the ring. It’s been a long time time I was in a ring. It’s been a long time since I’ve been wrestling out there. So I’m just happy. I’m happy with it.
Me coming back right now, I’ve had so much time off to really just think to myself, what [do] I want? What does Sammy Guevara want out of wrestling? Truthfully, I just want to be the best version of myself. That might sound corny or generic, but I’m just tired of standing in my own way. I can go and say it’s because of this or because of that I’m not where I am, but ultimately, you have the choice to go and be the person that you want to be, and that’s what I want to do.
When I come back right now, I just want this to be the best version of Sammy Guevara, and I don’t want to stand in my own way, and I want to just keep giving my best.
Whatever comes my way, whether it’s Ring of Honor, whether it’s Collision, Dynamite, whatever it is, you put me in that wrestling ring, and I’m just gonna give it my all, man, and I hope that I can make myself proud, that in a couple months, I can watch back and say, ‘Hey, you’re doing alright,’
Dustin Rhodes Could Leave AEW
Meanwhile, the future of Guevara’s tag team partner is seemingly hanging in the balance. It’s been reported that Dustin Rhodes’ AEW contract expires before the end of September. There has been no word on whether an extension has been agreed.
Rhodes signed with AEW in 2019 and works behind the scenes with the women’s division as well as teaming with Guevara and The Von Erichs.
Guevara and Rhodes made the most recent defence of their ROH World Tag Team Titles on the September 21st episode of Collision, seeing off The Undisputed Kingdom in a wild Bunkhouse Brawl.
