AEW’s Biggest Star May Become John Cena’s Successor In WWE
Could an AEW star make the jump to WWE to become John Cena’s successor?
That theory was recently explored when a former talent of the Stamford promotion surprisingly named a wrestler from the rival company when asked about Cena’s replacement.
The 48-year-old will officially retire from wrestling on December 13.
His final match will be at Saturday Night’s Main Event XLII in Washington, DC, against Gunther, who has promised to make the 17-time world champion tap out.
While the industry and Cena’s fans come to terms with his retirement, discussions have already begun about who might replace him at the top.
Ex-WWE star Maven initially picked Bron Breakker to be that individual. He then proceeded to name an AEW talent, who he believes is equally capable of shouldering the responsibility, more so as a heel.
Speaking on an interview with TMZ Sports, the former WWE Hardcore Champion named AEW’s Maxwell Jacob Friedman, should he make the transition to WWE.
Can I give you one more? And this is gonna be contingent one him going to the WWE. MJF.
When questioned if MJF could pull it off as a babyface, Maven stated that he will have to do it as a heel.
No, but that’s the beauty of him. He is a heel that we haven’t seen since the 1970s. He is a heel that would get chased to the parking lot after shows because he pisses that many people off. [28:28 onwards]
MJF Closing In On AEW Return
Whether or not MJF makes the jump to WWE is a topic for a later date, as he is still contracted to AEW.
Friedman last wrestled at the All Out pay-per-view, where he lost the Tables N’ Tacks match to Mark Briscoe.
Wrestlvotes recently reported that the former world champion was considered for an appearance at AEW’s Worlds End on December 27.
MJF also got married to his partner, Alicia Atout, in September, with several peers in attendance.
