Major AEW Star May Be John Cena’s Last WWE Opponent Ever

John Cena WWE WrestleMania

Brock Lesnar’s shock return to WWE took everyone by surprise when he targeted John Cena right after the SummerSlam event.

The Beast Incarnate’s unexpected attack on John Cena sparked intense speculation that he could be Cena’s next opponent. Wrestling journalist Chris Van Vliet expressed his shock over Lesnar’s return and sudden assault on Cena, noting how nobody predicted this twist. The move shook up John Cena’s farewell tour storyline and left fans eagerly guessing what’s next.

John Cena’s Last Rival Could Be Edge

According to Chris Van Vliet, the only other possible opponent whose surprise would rival Lesnar’s return against the 17-time World Champion is Edge, aka Adam Copeland, who currently wrestles in AEW. He predicted that the AEW star could also be Cena’s final opponent in WWE.

Edge has a rich history with John Cena in WWE, having delivered some of the wrestling’s most memorable matches. Rumors have been swirling about Edge possibly returning to WWE for one last showdown with Cena before the latter’s retirement, which would be an equally monumental send-off.

“The only other insanely shocking return that we could have, and I don’t think it’s possible, but I think there’s maybe like 1% chance of it happening, is Edge, and we want to talk about history. There’s obviously a ton of history with John Cena and Edge, and I’ve said this like a month ago, but I’ll repeat it again here, cuz like this is the 1% okay. It’s the 1% chance of this happening.”

“When I interviewed Adam Copeland last May, he told me he had about a year and a half left on his contract. He debuted in AEW on October 1st, 2023. So if he’s telling me that was October 1st, 2023, I interviewed him, you know, about half a year later-ish in May. So if he’s saying I’ve got about a year and a half left in my contract, and that was May of last year, maybe that takes us to – it was a two-year contract – maybe that takes us to about October 1st, 2023.”

“Of course, he broke his leg; he could have injury time added to that, it’s a possibility there. Who knows what his actual contract looks like? Could you imagine? Could you imagine they set something up where he has a mystery opponent, or there’s three dates left, or five dates left, or whatever happens to be, and out of nowhere, ‘You think you know me?’ Wow! Wild. It’d be wild. But as it stands right now.” [33:30 – 35:05]

John Cena is officially set to face Logan Paul at Clash in Paris on August 31. This match came about following heated confrontations on WWE SmackDown, where Logan Paul provoked Cena, culminating in a tag team brawl involving Cody Rhodes and Drew McIntyre.
