Recent AEW Star Forced To Forfeit NJPW G1 Match

NJPW G1 Climax 35

One recent star making their mark in AEW has been sidelined in the G1 Climax 35 tournament after suffering a right knee injury.

The first night of the NJPW G1 Climax 35 tournament took place on July 19, 2025, in Sapporo, Japan, at the North Hokkaido Prefectural Sports Center. Gabe Kidd sustained a right knee injury in the opening round of the tournament. Kidd has recently been causing a stir in AEW as Jon Moxley’s mercenary, although he failed to help Moxley retain the AEW World Title at All In Texas.

During his match against AEW’s Konosuke Takeshita, he hyperextended his right knee after an impact spot. Although he finished the match, the injury forced him to miss his following tournament bouts.

As a result of Kidd’s withdrawal, his scheduled July 23 match against Shingo Takagi in Nagaoka was forfeited, granting Takagi two points in the tournament standings. Kidd was also unable to compete in his highly anticipated match against Zack Sabre Jr., handing Sabre additional points by default.

On July 20, Gabe Kidd appeared before the audience in crutches and explained his decision to sit out upcoming matches, emphasizing his dedication to performing at his highest level for fans who paid to see him. Kidd made it clear that he wouldn’t compete unless he was fully fit and able to deliver the quality of matches he expects from himself.

Although this injury meant withdrawing from immediate tournament action, Kidd expressed his determination to return later in the event once he is medically cleared. He stressed that his journey in the G1 Climax is not over, showing both frustration at the setback and hope for a comeback.

NJPW Comments on AEW Star Gabe Kidd’s Injury

On July 23, New Japan Pro-Wrestling officials released a report on their official website, confirming that Kidd’s hyper-extended knee is the reason behind his inability to compete in multiple G1 Climax matches. NJPW expressed regret over the unfortunate situation and emphasized that Kidd’s health and recovery remain the top priority. The promotion promised to provide updates on Kidd’s condition as more medical assessments are completed.

“Thank you for supporting New Japan Pro-Wrestling. Gabe Kidd, who sustained an injury to his right knee on day one of G1 Climax 35 competition July 19, has yet to be cleared for return and as a result, will miss July 23’s event in Nagaoka. We apologise to fans who were looking forward to seeing Kidd wrestle, and appreciate your understanding. Tonight’s scheduled match between Gabe Kidd and Shingo Takagi will be cancelled, and Takagi will earn two points via forfeit.” [H/T NJPW]
