AEW Star Compared To Rey Mysterio

Rey Mysterio WWE

One veteran thinks an AEW star can hit the same heights as Rey Mysterio.

WWE legend Rey Mysterio began wrestling when he was just 14 years old and within ten years he’d already helped revolutionise the industry in North America. Through spells in ECW and WCW, Mysterio along with the likes of Eddie Guerrero, took an eye-catching, high-flying style into the mainstream.

Mysterio eventually landed in WWE after the collapse of WCW, and won the World Championship, becoming one of the most beloved stars of the modern era. Following his unbelievable success, WWE has repeatedly tried to find the “next Rey Mysterio” with several Superstars being positioned in that spot, but ultimately falling short.

Considering he’s 49 years old and still at the top of his game, it appears the next Rey Mysterio, is actually Rey Mysterio.

Tommy Dreamer Thought AEW Star Would Be WWE’s Next Rey Mysterio

On a recent episode of Busted Open Radio, Tommy Dreamer gave his thoughts on Ricochet’s move to AEW and compared him to Mysterio. The former ECW star said Ricochet made the right decision by leaving WWE as he had hit something of a ceiling within the company.

“I think it was a very good move to leave the WWE because I think one, he was there for a while and never was able to crack [the] mid-card and not because of talent, just because of, I don’t know, booking,” Dreamer elaborated. “Sometimes this is the old ‘you got to leave to get noticed to get over,’ so you can eventually go back a-la Cody Rhodes.”

Dreamer then went on to draw a comparison with the Lucha legend.

“I always said he’s the next Rey Mysterio. Don’t think he had that opportunity to be that [in WWE]. So if he goes out and becomes a proven draw, then I think that’s a good move for Ricochet. He hit the glass ceiling, I feel, in WWE,”

Ricochet is undefeated in singles action since joining AEW, most recently picking up a win over The Beast Mortos. In the minutes after that victory it was announced that Ricochet would challenge Will Ospreay for the International Title on the October 2nd episode of Dynamite.
