AEW Moves To Trademark New Match Type

AEW have gone through the official channels to make sure they have the rights to a new match type after getting it trademarked.

On the 11th May 2023 edition of AEW Dynamite, the show featured a Double Jeopardy Match between Claudio Castagnoli and Rey Fenix. With Castagnoli holding the ROH World Championship and Fenix one of the brand’s tag titles, the stipulation meant that the winner would get a shot at the other competitor’s gold. In the end, it was Castagnoli who picked up the victory.

It has now come to light that AEW filed for the trademark to Double Jeopardy on 11th May, meaning it’s likely to be a stipulation which is used again in the future.

For this interested, the full description of the listing is as follows:

Mark For: DOUBLE JEOPARDY trademark registration is intended to cover the categories of entertainment services in the nature of live wrestling performances; Entertainment services in the nature of production of wrestling programs and events; Entertainment services, namely, an ongoing multimedia program featuring wrestling distributed via various platforms across multiple forms of transmission media.

At the time of writing, it has not been confirmed who Claudio Castagnoli’s tag partner will be for his shot at the ROH Tag Team Championships, although with Bryan Danielson and Wheeler Yuta watching the win on the monitor it is likely to be one of those two. The date of the match isn’t confirmed either, as it’s not set for this week’s Dynamite. There is the possibility it could feature on Double Or Nothing at the end of the month, or just as likely on specific ROH programming.
