Why AEW’s Jake Roberts Worked With Snakes Despite His Phobia

Despite being synonymous with the reptiles, Jake Roberts has admitted that snakes “scare the p*ss” out of him.

During his legendary career, Jake Roberts used snakes to terrify many of his opponents, draping the reptiles over opponents and even infamously having a cobra to bite ‘Macho Man’ Randy Savage. But it seems that it wasn’t just his foes that were scared by the animals, with Roberts himself admitting a phobia of them.

Speaking to Chris Van Vliet, Roberts joked that instead of snakes, he should have carried a cockroach around with him.

“I don’t like snakes at all. I’m terrified of them. They scare the p*ss out of me, and you never get used to getting bit. I should have been like Billy the bug, just carry a cockroach around.

“You know, if I shoved a cockroach in your ear, that would mess with your head, yeah, yeah, especially your ear. Little cockroach dug in there.”

Explaining why he went ahead with a gimmick revolving around the reptiles, Roberts said it was because of the fear.

“Because of that, because most people are afraid of snakes. Your parents tell you from the get go, keep away snakes. And that’s ingrained in you.

“It’s sort of something that is taught to us from the very beginning, and kids dig it, because mom and dad can’t stand it. You know, it makes mama squirm. I love to see your mother squirm. I still love seeing that.”

Jake Roberts Felt Like An Animal When Using Steroids

During a recent episode of his Snake Pit podcast, Jake Roberts opened up on his use of steroids. The star says he began using them while recovering from a career-threatening neck surgery, and admitted they turned him into “an animal” when it came to the gym, saying all he wanted to do was lift weights.

During the same episode of the show, Jake Roberts revealed that Andre The Giant used to fart on him as a joke. He said it was “amazing how long a giant can fart,” with Andre “dropping 30-second bombs” on him.
