Why AEW Star Turned Down Darby Allin’s Mount Everest Invitation
Darby Allin wanted a fellow AEW wrestler to climb Mount Everest with him, but the answer was no.
It was on May 19th when it was announced that former AEW TNT and Tag Team Champion Darby Allin had officially climbed to the top of Mount Everest, which an incredible thing today.
In addition to climbing the iconic mountain that has claimed the lives of many people, Darby Allin also planted an AEW flag on the summit, just as he had said he would.
By climbing Mount Everest, Allin also had to walk away from AEW so he could prepare for the climb and make the climb. Because of that, Allin hasn’t had a match in over five months.
Sammy Guevara is an ROH Tag Team Champion with Dustin Rhodes, and like Allin, he’s been a part of AEW for over five years. While being interviewed by Sportskeeda’s Bill Apter, Guevara revealed that Allin had invited Guevara to climb Mount Everest with him, but Guevara had a good reason to decline.
“It’s something that him and I talked about years ago. He invited me to go do it with him, but I can’t leave my family. I can’t go and possibly risk dying up there. Maybe a younger Sammy would have took him up on that offer.
I’m not so old. I just feel like I can’t climb that. It’s very selfish of me to go, ‘Hey, my little baby, I’m going to go risk my life to climb this mountain. I may never come back.’ I feel like if you have a kid, it’d be very selfish of you to go and do something to put your life at risk like that.
Darby doesn’t have any kids yet, so I think more respect to him. He did it. What an accomplishment. It’s something he’s wanted to do for a long time. He wanted to do it last year, but he broke his leg and couldn’t do it.
He was able to do it now. I’m super happy for him. I texted him whenever it was reported that he did it, and we were just chatting back and forth. There’s a little crazy part of me that’s like, ‘Ooh, man, that adrenaline of risking it all to go and make it on top of the mountain,’ it’s super exciting for an adrenaline junkie like me. But I also got to remember it’s not just about me anymore. So I will be doing none of that.”
Tony Khan Praises Darby Allin’s Contributions To AEW
Recent comments from AEW’s Owner, Tony Khan, reveal that he’s a big supporter of Darby Allin.
“Darby Allin is one of the greatest wrestlers in AEW, and we’re incredibly proud of what he’s accomplished.
Climbing Mount Everest was a major goal for him, and he did it. He set out on this journey with two clear objectives — the climb itself, which demanded total focus, and becoming the first pro wrestler, and one of the first pro athletes, to reach the summit.
It’s an extraordinary feat, and something truly worth celebrating.”
Khan went on to say AEW will be “thrilled to have him back” regarding Allin. It’s not known when Allin will officially return to the AEW ring, but since the Everest climb is done, it should be soon.
