AEW Continental Classic Return Imminent
The AEW Continental Classic took the wrestling world by storm in 2023 and now it’s been confirmed when the 2024 tournament will begin.
On Dynamite in Bridgeport, it was confirmed that the Continental Classic will return on the 27th of November edition of Dynamite which is set to take place in Chicago. No other details about the tournament were revealed with those taking part in the tournament remaining a mystery for now – apart from current AEW Continental Champion Kazuchika Okada.
Okada made clear in a video package that aired the previous week that he was aiming to go down in history as the greatest tournament wrestler of all time following his four G1 Climax wins in New Japan Pro Wrestling.
What Happened In The 2023 AEW Continental Classic?
The inaugural Continental Classic saw 12 of AEW’s top stars compete in a round-robin tournament split into two six-man leagues. The Blue League was won by Bryan Danielson and he met Eddie Kingston who finished one point behind him in the semi-final while the Gold League finished in a three-way tie as Jon Moxley, Swerve Strickland, and Jay White all finished on 12 points.
Moxley won the three-way semi-final to advance to the final where he faced his old friend Eddie Kingston who overcame Danielson. That final took place at Worlds End with Eddie Kingston winning and becoming the first-ever Continental Crown Champion as he held the newly-introduced AEW Continental Championship, the ROH World Championship, and the NJPW Strong Openweight Title.
Eddie Kingston lost the AEW Continental Championship to Kazuchika Okada in March 2024 and The Rainmaker has held that title ever since.
