AEW Made Last Minute Change To Jon Moxley Match At Revolution
AEW had a different plan for Jon Moxley.
AEW Revolution ended in chaos as Jon Moxley walked out with the World Championship, but that was only part of the story.
With the action in full flow, Wheeler Yuta made his way to the ring and flattened challenger Cope with a Busiaku Knee before handing Moxley the briefcase with the World Championship belt inside. This, in turn, brought out Jay White, who took out Yuta and then took aim at Moxley.
However, as White swung the briefcase, he connected with Cope, but the veteran was able to kick out. It was then Cope’s turn to go for the pin, but the referee was pulled out of the ring by Christian Cage, who cashed in his World Title contract.
Despite Cage being the fresher man, he was eventually choked out by Moxley.
As Moxley went to leave, he was attacked by Swerve Strickland, who launched himself from a balcony. Earlier in the night, Strickland became the number one contender for the World Title after beating Ricochet.
Plans For Jon Moxley vs. Cope Were “Axed”
Speaking on Wrestling Observer Live, Bryan Alvarez noted that AEW’s plans for Moxley originally looked a little different, and the match with Cope would have been even more chaotic.
There was apparently some idea for the main event that involved way more people than ended up being out there, including some returns. And at the last minute it just got axed.
I don’t know who it was or what they were going to do, but there was a second plan that didn’t take place.”
During the post-show press conference, Tony Khan said Swerve Strickland’s attack on Jon Moxley was the reason the bloodbath between “Timeless” Toni Storm and Mariah May didn’t take the main event spot.
Ahead of the event, Cope admitted he initially didn’t understand the Death Riders storyline and wanted to try and make things more logical for fans.
