AEW Boss Tony Khan Makes Major Backstage Change
Tony Khan has moved to a more traditional backstage structure.
According to a new report from Bryan Alvarez shared with his X subscribers, Tony Khan has moved away from his typical approach to production.
As noted by Alvarez, Khan is now holding full production meetings ahead of TV tapings, falling in line with a more formal and traditional structure. There had previously been criticism of Khan’s approach, with some claiming it was disorganised and failed to control preventable mistakes on TV.
“Tony Khan has been doing actual production meetings for a while now, getting the top agents, announcers, etc., all in a room together to go over things before the shows.”
Alvarez added that the change was originally implemented several months ago. Khan had previously favoured a series of meetings and conversations with individuals throughout the day before tapings began.
“Tony (Khan’s) production meeting was, well, I go and I meet with these guys and then I go meet with these guys… He just did these meetings throughout the day and that was what he considered production meetings,” Alvarez explained. “Other people were like, that’s not a production meeting. So the point of this is, of late, he actually is now doing production meetings.”
Could Tony Khan And AEW Be Heading For Trouble?
Back in October 2024, AEW announced a monster media rights deal that kept Dynamite on TBS and Collision on TNT. The agreement was reportedly for $555 million over three years, which averages out to over $185 million per year with a fourth-year option.
But looking ahead, Dave Meltzer suggested that things could prove to be more complicated in the future, pointing to boxing’s move away from traditional television.
On the upcoming July 30 edition of AEW Dynamite, “Hangman” Adam Page is set to defend the World Championship against former champion Jon Moxley.
