AEW Avoiding Singles Matches For Huge Star

One of AEW’s most prominent names is not being booked in singles matches.

The days of former AEW World Champion Kenny Omega having lengthy and memorable singles matches appear to be over.

It was AEW All In Texas last July when Omega lost to his greatest rival, Kazuchika Okada, who became the AEW Unified Champion. Since then, every match Omega has had has been a tag team match.

At AEW Full Gear, Kenny Omega and The Jurassic Express duo of Jack Perry & Luchasaurus lost to Josh Alexander and The Young Bucks. After the match, the Don Callis Family beat up Omega and friends, so the Bucks essentially turned babyface by saving Omega. It’s a reunion of The Bucks and Omega, who used to be known as The Elite together.

Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter reports that AEW’s booking of Omega in tag team matches is being done for a reason.

“They are trying to avoid putting him in a long singles match and that may be part of the reason they put him back with the Young Bucks.”

The trio of Omega and the Young Bucks are former AEW World Trios Champions, so perhaps their reunion will lead to some more gold in the future.

AEW’s Kenny Omega Doesn’t Plan To Wrestle Until The Wheels Fall Off

After missing over a year due to diverticulitis and undergoing various surgeries to repair injuries, Kenny Omega has endured a lot in his 20+ years as a pro wrestler.

While speaking about the future recently, Kenny Omega made it clear that he isn’t a man who will wrestle until he physically can’t do it anymore. It might be before that.

“I would like to be in a situation where I left the ring not having any regrets and not feeling embarrassed or that I tarnished my own reputation. So, I would like to leave when I have some semblance of athleticism left in my body.

I don’t want to completely work until the wheels fall off and that the person that leaves wrestling is one that barely resembles the Kenny Omega of old. So, I’ve been thinking a lot about when that timing would be.

One important thing for me, too, is when I finally do leave, whenever that may be, I don’t—and this might sound odd—but I don’t want people to be sad. In fact, the best case scenario for me would be that they don’t realize I’m gone at all.

I would love to build people or have the peace of mind that the company has built enough stars so that their star is shining bright enough to distract from me stepping away from the scene. That would make me the most happy.”

At 42 years old, Kenny Omega is at an age where people do think about retiring a lot more, but as he said above, he still plans on competing at a high level for as long as he can.
