AEW Star Addresses Tag Team’s Future After Surprise Title Win
A new champion in AEW has addressed the status of his alliance with an injured wrestler.
The finals of a tournament to determine the next challengers for the AEW Tag Team Titles saw FTR (Dax Wheeler & Cash Wheeler) face off against Brodido’s Brody King & Bandido, who is the ROH World Champion.
Since the FTR/Brodido match ended in a 30-minute draw, both teams were rewarded with a shot at the AEW Tag Team Champions, The Hurt Syndicate, at the Forbidden Door PPV in London.
With the AEW Tag Team Titles on the line at Forbidden Door, The Hurt Syndicate’s Bobby Lashley and Shelton Benjamin failed to defend their titles successfully. That’s because they were attacked by Ricochet and Gates of Agony’s Bishop Kaun & Toa Liona. Lashley and Benjamin went fighting to the back with them.
That left Bandido alone with FTR, and this time there was a winner. It was a bit of a sloppy finish as King gave Bandido a monkey flip so that Bandido splashed Dax. The problem was that Bandido wasn’t covering properly, so he had to re-adjust, and Cash had to stop himself from making the save even though he was close.
For Brodido, it’s their first time as AEW Tag Team Champions.
Brody King Has A Message For Former AEW Ally Buddy Matthews
Before winning the Tag Team Titles, Brody King was an AEW Trios Tag Team Champion with Malakai Black and Buddy Matthews, who were King’s allies in the House of Black stable that also included Julia Hart. House of Black is no more since Black is back in WWE, while Buddy has been out of action with a serious ankle injury since February, and Buddy recently had surgery to help his recovery.
At AEW’s post-Forbidden Door media scrum, King was asked about his former ally Buddy and how he might react to seeing King as an AEW Tag Team Champion.
“I hope that Buddy is at home healing and he is happy for me. When the time comes and he comes back, we always have the trios titles.
But I will say right that two AEW homegrown guys are Tag Team Champions again and hopefully it stays that way for a while.”
