Adam Copeland Discusses How He Felt About Final WWE Match

Adam Copeland has explained why he was so happy about how his WWE run as Edge came to an end.

The last time WWE fans saw Adam Copeland using the name Edge was during his final match on SmackDown. That took place on the August 18th edition of WWE SmackDown when Adam Copeland (as Edge) beat Sheamus in a first-time-ever match between two legends.

What was significant about that match was that it took place in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, which is near where Copeland grew up. For over a year before the match, Copeland had spoken about wanting to possibly have a retirement match in Toronto. Fans didn’t know it at the time, but it was his WWE farewell match.

During a recent interview with Adrian Hernandez of The Sporting Tribune, Adam Copeland explained why that match with Sheamus was the right way for him to wrap up his WWE career.

“I’ve said from day one, I want to retire in Toronto. It didn’t matter to me if it’s WrestleMania. I’ve been on 15 of them, you know what I mean? And to be honest, a WrestleMania crowd is usually a lot of corporate business. If you want that wrestling crowd, if you want that emotion, [the Toronto show] that’s what I wanted. That’s what Toronto always brings for me.”

“So I get to get in there with Sheamus, whom I never shared a ring with in all that time, in a one-on-one match, knowing what him and I could do at this stage of our careers? Come on, all day. That to me…I couldn’t ask for a better way to end there. I really couldn’t…And to have the kind of match we did, I’m really proud of that one. So yeah, to me, the place was always most important.”

It was about one month after that final SmackDown match when Copeland’s WWE deal expired. That led to the AEW debut of Adam Copeland at the WrestleDream PPV.

What Happened In Adam Copeland’s First AEW PPV Match?

At AEW Full Gear in Los Angeles, Adam Copeland teamed up with fellow WWE Hall of Famer Sting and Darby Allin to defeat the team of Christian Cage, Luchasaurus & Nick Wayne.

The story of the match was that Copeland wanted to destroy his lifelong best friend Christian Cage during the match, but Cage kept running away and even left the match completely when Copeland went after him. The trio of Copeland, Sting & Allin pinned Luchasaurus to get the win for their team.
