The WWE Smackdown Live Reaction for 09/24/19 by Kelly Dishnow

Welcome to The Smackdown Reaction, where we offer another view of this week’s Smackdown show. As always, you can read John’s detailed review here.

There was a quick recap of the Roman/Rowan angle starts us off and night two from the Chase Center in San Francisco starts with a promo from Erick Rowan. It was not a very strong promo from him, but Daniel Bryan interrupts to challenge Rowan to a fight. Bryan gets into the ring and the bell rings from the conveniently placed referee.

Excellent match between the two and Bryan made Rowan look great. The little oopsie at the end where Bryan’s foot got caught up in the ropes didn’t hurt the match and they played it in quite well. Harper jumps into the fray after the match to bring out Roman for the save. Rowan and Harper get cleared from the ring and all that was missing was Teddy Long to book the tag match at Hell in a Cell.

Kofi Kingston is up next to pretape a promo with Michael Cole about the Title defense next week against Brock Lesnar. Kofi sold the fighting champion well, listing everyone he’s beaten. Kofi showed the confidence needed to defeat Brock, but I’m leaning towards a title change.

Chad Gable was up next to talk about Corbin before being interrupted by Mike Kanellis. I hope it’s not Gable, oh wrong angle. Kanellis wants to prove himself to Maria by tapping out in less than a minute. At least Mike got TV time, which many cannot claim. Elias then appears and sings a horrible song about short people. I guess feuding with Elias will be better than getting sucked into the Maria baby daddy angle.

This week’s Teddy Long Tag Team Special has Charlotte teaming with the new 24/7 Champ Carmella to take on the Boss and Hug Connection, based off of last week’s events. The match was decent for what it was. Not quite sure why Charlotte just stood there watching while Carmella was trapped in the Banks Statement. At least she didn’t attempt a moonsault! Truth grabbed Carmella and the chase was on by the female locker room for the 24/7 Title. Bayley and Sasha tried to double up on Charlotte until Becky Lynch makes the save, clearing everyone from the ring to stand tall.

Ali and Shinsuke Nakamura are up next in a really good match. I really like the Ali character, but he really needs to watch some of those bumps. The suicide dive landing on his head is going to give him another concussion. The Sami Zayn factor came into play in the match and cost Ali the victory.

I’m not really quite sure what Big E kept doing during the New Day/B Team match but it was, different? Second most obvious match outcome of the night.

There was a weird exchange between Mandy Rose and Heavy Machinery.

Somebody on Creative remembered that The Kabuki Warriors were still on the roster and decided to give them a match. The “main event” match at that. Really good match between the two teams and a nice win for the Kabuki Warriors. WWE just needs to build them back up before they win the Women’s Tag Team Championship. Maybe Paige is due back soon to start speaking for them again.

We wrap up the night with Shane McMahon addressing the Kevin Owens lawsuit. Shane offered up two heelish offers that Owens turned down. Owens told Shane he wasn’t doing it for the money, but to rid the WWE of Shane. Owens proposed a loser leaves WWE ladder match and the audio was cut before we could hear Shane accept. The ladder match was surprising, as I was figuring on a Hell in a Cell match instead because Shane has to fall from high places. Ladder match will check that box and likely take place on the Fox premiere (on October 4 in case you haven’t heard) as a fitting way to end Shane’s run.

The quick cut back to the Becky and Sasha fight backstage showed a little difficulty doing things with Smackdown with the one less hour to work with.

Let’s take a look at the highs and lows from Smackdown.

The Highs:

Solid matches this week. Good in-ring action all around to keep you engaged.

Hopefully, the ladder match finally puts an end to the Shane McMahon run. He’s way overstayed his welcome.

The Lows:

It’s sad to see Ember Moon, Asuka, and Kairi Sane chasing Carmella for the 24/7 title. They all deserve better, but at least it’s TV time. Good to see Kairi was smart enough to grab the 24/7 title and bring it along in the chase.

The Becky/Sasha fight at the end was a bit short due to time constraints. I wish the show had been timed better.
