AEW News: World Championship Match Announced for All Out, Number of PPV Buys for Double or Nothing

It was officially announced today that the first ever All Elite Wrestling World Heavyweight Championship match will take place on August 31 at the Sears Centre Arena in Chicago, Illinois. The match will see six-time World Champion (in WWE) Chris Jericho face off against “Hangman” Adam Page.

Jericho earned his spot in the title match by beating Kenny Omega in the main event of Double or Nothing this past Saturday. Jericho won the match clean with a Judas Effect spinning back elbow to face.

Page got his shot at the AEW World Title by winning the Casino Battle Royal at the Double or Nothing pre-show.

Tickets for All Out go on sale on June 14, which is two weeks from today. All Out will be on pay-per-view like Double or Nothing was.

TJR Thoughts: It should be an outstanding match that’s tough to predict because it’s possible that AEW will go with the heel Jericho as their first World Champion because he has more name value and credibility than anybody else in the company. However, for a company that’s new like AEW, perhaps they would prefer to put over the younger guy in Page, who is considered one of the faces of the company. My prediction for right now is that Jericho will win, but I would no problem with a Page win.

* In other AEW news, it was reported by the Wrestling Observer’s Dave Meltzer that Double or Nothing did about 98,000 buys between television orders and digital pay-per-view purchases with a near 50/50 split between the two options. Meltzer reported that about 67% of those orders came from the United States followed by the United Kingdom as a strong second followed by Australia, Germany and Canada. That PPV number isn’t double what All In did last September, but this show also had a significantly higher price point.

When you add in the replay PPV buys that will likely occur, Meltzer said that it should easily top ECW’s biggest ever PPV event at 99,000 buys, which would make this the biggest PPV in professional wrestling history that wasn’t a WWE or WCW show. That’s very impressive.
