WWE Announces Taping Dates For “Mae Young Classic” Women’s Tournament

The long rumored WWE women’s tournament finally has a name and taping dates as well as a familiar location.

Triple H announced on Twitter that the tournament will be called the Mae Young Classic, which is obviously named after WWE Hall of Famer Mae Young. It will be filmed on July 13 and 14 from Full Sail University in Orlando. It’s the same location where NXT tapings and last year’s Cruiserweight Classic took place.

Here’s more info from WWE.com as well:

WWE has announced that the first-ever Mae Young Classic women’s tournament will take place Thursday, July 13, and Friday, July 14, from Full Sail Live in Winter Park, Fla.

Tickets will go on sale this Friday at 10 a.m. ET via www.nxttickets.com.

The tournament, named after WWE Hall of Famer and one of the greatest WWE Superstars in history, Mae Young, will feature 32 of the top female competitors from around the world participating in a single-elimination tournament. The unprecedented event will stream later this summer exclusively on WWE Network.

“The Mae Young Classic will mark a significant moment in the evolution of WWE,” said Paul “Triple H” Levesque, WWE Executive Vice President, Talent, Live Events and Creative. “We are proud to provide this unique opportunity for the best female talent from around the world.”

Additional information on the Mae Young Classic will be announced in the coming weeks.

The next step is announcing the names involved with it and a structure for the tournament. If it runs like the Cruiserweight Classic then it will be “win or go home” style tournament. They could opt to try something else, though.

They haven’t announced an airdate for the tournament on WWE Network, but it’s likely going to be in August. There have been other reports stating that WWE may upload it all at the same time rather than airing it in every week at a particular time.

TJR Thoughts: The name is interesting because Mae Young is popular among WWE fans, but it’s not like she is considered one of the best women’s wrestlers ever. She was more known for silly angles with Mark Henry in the Attitude Era and taking big bumps. I’m not saying it to disrespect her. It’s just kind of a weird choice. Oh well. Not a big deal. What matters more is developing talent and getting more fans interested in women’s wrestling. It’s a great idea. Glad it’s happening.
