Rumor: Rey Mysterio May Return To WWE In Time For SummerSlam

TJR Wrestling

Rey Mysterio may be returning to World Wrestling Entertainment just in time for this year’s WWE SummerSlam. This is according to “Dr. Lucha” Steve Sims during his appearance on a recent edition of The Wrestling Observer Live.

Mysterio left WWE in February 2015 after a wrist injury in April 2014 kept him from competing. Mysterio was with WWE for 13 years and as he’s mentioned in various tweets, he left the company on good terms with the door apparently being left open.

In his time away from WWE, Mysterio worked with AAA which is a lucha-libre wresting promotion based in Mexico. It was recently reported that the former WWE Champion parted ways with AAA due to financial disputes. Mysterio is currently working with Lucha Underground as he’s playing a prominent role in the company’s second season. Although Mysterio is enjoying his time in Lucha Underground, it seems like it was never meant to be a long-term working agreement.

Lucha Underground’s season finale, Ultima Lucha, will most likely (if following in the steps of its first season) take place toward the end of July/beginning of August. With WWE SummerSlam on August 21, this logistically works out as Mysterio won’t be featured on two different promotions at the same time. However, ideally, it may cause creative problems for Lucha Underground depending on how they plan on playing out Mysterio’s storyline in season two.

Below is Rey’s last match in WWE against Bad News Barrett in April 2014.

Mark’s reaction: I definitely think Mysterio will be back with WWE in the future. SummerSlam seems very possible if it wouldn’t be too difficult for Rey to get out of his current deal with Lucha Underground. I think if the machine that is WWE really wants someone from Lucha Underground, it wouldn’t be much of a problem.

I’d imagine after spending 13 years with a company like WWE, you start to become very acclimated to the “WWE way of doing things”; so maybe Mysterio’s time away from the company was a little jarring in certain aspects and he’d prefer to be back in a spot where he was more comfortable.

A Mysterio return would likely mean that we’d be seeing him in a mid-card role, similar to his most recent role in WWE. Due to Rey’s age (41) and the fact that he suffered some injuries during the last few years of his WWE career, I don’t see him getting a significant push (especially in a singles capacity).

It would be cool to see Mysterio as part of a tag team with a younger wrestler, similar to when he was teaming with Sin Cara. Although that team didn’t work out and he’s become more limited in his wrestling ability, I think Mysterio still has something to offer in the ring and a tag team may work best. Maybe team him with a repackaged Fandango. Put him in a mask and call him The Sun Dragon (look it up). No? Not a good idea? Don’t hurt me.
