More Details Emerge On CM Punk’s Confusing WWE Contract

CM Punk

CM Punk’s original WWE contract was reportedly “very temporary.”

It was recently reported that CM Punk is looking to renegotiate the WWE contract he only signed in November 2023. And although that isn’t quite the case, there are discussions underway between the two sides.

A follow-up report from Fightful Select noted that while Punk’s deal isn’t up “imminently” the company has approached him about “expanding it” as business has exploded.

Punk is due to return to the ring at SummerSlam to take on Drew McIntyre.

More Details On CM Punk/WWE Talks

Writing in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer suggested Punk’s deal was very much short-term, but loaded with clauses to keep it running. A source within WWE described his contract as “very temporary,” but there have been talks about a new deal.

Meltzer also noted that any new deal will be more detailed than the November agreement that was thrown together at very short notice. The report stresses that this was always the plan.

Regarding stories on Punk and a new contract, the original deal he signed was short-term and filled with rollover clauses that would go a lot longer. From those in WWE, it was a three-year max with rollovers deal but that they were expecting to renegotiate it based on how things went at this time…

From a WWE source close to the subject, “I can’t say it’s a `restructuring.’ His original deal was very temporary” with a million rollovers, and they’ve been talking with him about a new deal. So it’s both sides talking.

Meanwhile, in a recent interview CM Punk suggested Vince McMahon’s WWE departure helped pave the way for his return to the company. But the star was quick to deny suggestions he felt like he needed to return to WWE, instead commenting that it relied on the stars aligning.
